RESULTS 2009

VTTA(NM) 18 Kilometre time trial at Ranby on 14th March is my first event of 2009. This event starts fast for most of the circuit then start a long steady climb before a final dash down the A1 back to Ranby. I chose to ride my road bike as I thought it would be more suitable on the climb. from Barnby Moor to the slip road on to the A1 at Blyth. This resulted in a time of 30:11 and a plus of +2:57 giving me 47th place out of 110 riders.

NMCF 25 mile time trial at Hatfield Woodhouse on the 28th March comes next, Very strong winds, a cold temperature and an icy shower just before the start made me decide not to ride. D.N.S. Appology was recorded on the result sheet.

NMCF Pooled Clubs on the 25th April. The O25/13 is certainly the worst course that I ever ride on and because of this I have built another bike with a steel frame, a cheap second hand disc wheel and a standard metal front wheel especially for riding on it. I chose to use a 93 inch fixed gear which proved to be a little too low for me on the day. I finished with a time of 1:07:43. The weather was good and with a higher gear I could have knocked 4 or 5 minutes of that time.

Raliegh the all steel bicycle, I built this for the rough O25/13

VTTA Yorkshire 30.. 10th May  V243. I did not feel at my best on this morning and it showed in my performance. I was an almost still day and I should have flown, but I just could not get going and I had to settle for a time of 1:17:02. the slowest thirty I have ever ridden.

Team Swift 50.. 16th May  A50/3. I felt a lot better for this one but the weather wasn't, a strong southerely wind was blowing and heavy rain showers. I was lucky as the rain only got me for a few minutes just before the turn but that wind slowed me down a bit and I finished in 2:12:19.

City R.C. 10.. 30th May  V718 I entered this event with a best time over the last three years of 27:26 which I did early last year on a cold and snowy afternoon. What a contrast this was, bright sunshine with a stiff easterely breeze of about 12 mph. I felt good and I put everything into getting a new P.B. I didn't manage to do that but I was pleased with the result of 23:14.

Newark Castle C.C. 25.. 6th June  A25/25.  Another hard one, when is that wind going to go away. It felt hard going out and was even harder on the return leg then I started suffering from cramp in my right calf, but I still managed to get a 1:03:07. Stuart Burrows of featherstone passed me on the line for three minutes.

Barnsley RC. 10.. 13th June  O10/1 A good day with a troublesome breeze as usual. 24:37 was my time which was good enough to be 2nd fastest of the six of the B.R.C. members beaten only by Neil Dyson.

Otley 50..  28th June  V259/1 A wet drizzly morning greeted me when I arose on this morning, and it did not stop until about 12 miles into the event though the Cloud did not clear nor the road dry out. I found the first 11.5 miles hard going but then came to life and set a good pace but could not pull back what I lost in that early part of the race, I passed the timekeeper in 2:05:57.

Y.R.C 25..  18th July   V236/1 Another very windy day and no chance of a PB but I worked as hard as I could and was pleased with my result in these conditions, and it was a seasons best. All in all a good day, Jackie came along to take some photographs and my time was 1:02:56.

Elmet 12 hour.. 26th July  V12HR This was my 5th 12 hour since 2004 and I can honestly say that I have never failed to finish one before. Well this year after 115.75 miles I climbed off the bike. The first four hours felt good and it looked like a PB was in the offering, then the pains in my thighs started followed by cramping, it was so bad the I thought I had torn a hamstring. I felt that to carry on would cause injury and ruin the rest of my season so I decided to call it a day which left me feeling dissapointed and depressed that this year I shall not be entered in the B.B.A.R.

Drighlington 25..  8th August V236/1 On this the same course as last months YRC 25 the conditions were better and I also felt fitter and it showed in my result, knocking almost three minutes from my last 25 mile ride and a seasons best at the distance. My time was 1:00:12.

.

Team Swift 100..  22nd August  V278. Lovely Sunny day for my last event in Barnsley Road Club colours. But I failed to get the overall club record, even though it was dry this year, the wind was much less favourable, and I lost  3 minutes and 35 seconds on last years very soggy ride finishing this year in 4:17:45. Not bad or a bloke only weeks away from his Sixtieth birthday. I was given a skinsuit to try on in my new club colours which are those of the Yorkshire Road Club.

Y.R.C. 50..  19th September  V259/1  My first event as a Yorkshire Road Club member and I produced my best ride of the season at the distance by passing the timekeeper in 2:03:41 and knocking over two minutes off my last fifty.

NMCF Pooled Clubs.. 20th September. O25/13. I marshalled at this event. The morning was quite cool but bright and it did get warmer as the day went on giving a very enjoyable ride home.

VTTA(NM) 10.. 3rd October O10/1.. What with gale force winds and the threat of rain I found this one rather heavy going, I couldn't get the bike above 26 mph at any point and I had to settle for a time of 25:57. The traffic was also heavy and I was held up at the turn and on the approach to the finish line. All the other riders times were down so my result wasn't really as bad as it looks. Roll on tomorrow.

Y.C.F. 25.. 4th October   V234...What can I say, It started of a float day and I hit 27mph without even trying but as the road started to climb up towards Knayton my average speed started to drop and I left the turn with 23.7 so I had to make it back somehow on the return leg of the ride. I did manage to push it up to 24.5 for a while and only for a while because I crossed the line at 24.2 with a time of 1:02:30. With the course being changed because of road works the ride to the start was a little over 7 miles giving me a total mileage of 42 miles.

Y.R.C. club scrap 25.. 11/10/09 V235...... A slow course at the best of times but today gave us the addition of a nice blustery wind that was never behind us enough to help only one person got under the hour and I finished with 1:07:03 and seventh place, 4th on standard and 9th on handicap.

Club Scrap Result Sheet

South Elmsall " Mince Pie10".... 20/12/09 Dry weather but with wet roads and an westerley wind making the outward leg heavy going. There were 5 riders only in the race with me being the only visitor. I came in second with a time of 29:52. Every one rode "Old Skool" no lo-pro's or aero gear and the course was 10.25 mlies.

Team Swift 10.. 20th December V718....This would have been the last event of 2009 but due to snow and icy conditions Mike Williams decided to cancell,so that is the end of my racing this year.

VTTA(NM) afternoon Ten Results

Week 4

This was week four but it was my first ride in the VTTA(NM)s' afternoon 10mile TT on the 24th June....Lovely sunny day and a good result, taking second place beaten only by Daryl May who took 55 seconds out of me. My time as I passed the time keeper was.23:20

Week 5

Another go at this weekly event on the 1st of July and again the weather was good. I improved on last weeks time by half a minute crossing the line in 22:50 taking first place on actual time, just pipping second placed man Daryl May of Sheffrec by four seconds.

Week 6

This was my third ride in this weekly event on the 8th of July and again the weather was good but much windier, the wind being directly against riders on the hardest part of the course. So I slowed a lot on last weeks time. I crossed the line in 23:51 taking second place on actual time, just pipping with Daryl May of Sheffrec beating me by a minute and thirtythree seconds.

Week 7

I missed this week because of the showery weather and did not want to drive all the way to Ranskill and not ride but nature being what it is thweather improved the moment it was too late to go. So not to be beaten jackie and I went up to the Sovereign for the Holme Valley Wheelers evening 10 and what a hard course that one is with it's climbs I returned a time of 27:58. It is an excellent cardio-vascular workout.

Week 8

Back to Ranskill this week and again the wind was strong but it did help on the hardest part of the course so much that I was climbing the drag to Mattersey at 33mph in places. I finished in third place with a time of 23:09. I was set off in the number five position and crossed first which felt good as it was witnessed by wife Jackie and daughter Dawn on her first visit to the event.

Week 9  was a wash out so I stayed at home.

Week 10 Ranskill this week was a little less windy and the rain cleared in time for the event. I was off no five and without Daryl I was hoping for at least 2nd place, but John Fitch did a flyer to beat me by 9 seconds pushing me into third place with a course record time for me of 22:46.

Results in 2009 with Barnsley R.C.

My last season of racing with Barnsley Road Club was just as fruitful as the previous two seasons.

At the annual presentation, which I did not attend, I was presented in my absence with certificates for completing the 50 miles in 4 hours and the 100 miles in 8 hours. The senior B.A.R. Trophy, the Veterans B.A,R Trophy and a Record certificate for taking the two up twentyfive mile team time trial record with John Allen.

RESULTS 2010

  • Sun..28th...Feb.......V310..........YCF 10..Today I rode this event my first time trial of the 2010 season, a 10 mile event run by the Yorkshire Cycling Federation. I enjoyed the outing but the result was very disappointing to say the least, over five minutes down on what I had hoped for. My time was 29:11 and everybody else seemed to put in good time so it must be me. I hope it is just an off day and not an indication of my fitness level.

  • Sat...13th March .... O18k.........NM,VTTA 18k......*Good ride in this event, a stiff sou'westerly made one strech of the course tough but the rest was fairly easy. I felt good and the pace felt good, Much better than my last event. My computer showed a time of 29.17 but the result board displayed 33.44. I have lodged a query so we await the outcome. It seems it was corrected after I left to 28:48 and that is a personal best. Thank goodness and Yippee!
  • Fri.....2th April..........V718.........City RC 10. Entry and cheque returned as my P.B. was not fast enough and I had forgotton to tick the reserve box on the entry form.

  • Sat...10th April.........V718.........VTTA(Yorks) 10. Spring sprung for this event, mild temperature, light easterly breeze and bright sunshine. My early season form shone through as I felt in full control and finished with a time of 23.30 only 16 seconds short of my midseason result of last year on the same course.

  • Sun..18th April .......O25/3.....Team Swift 25. I had so looked forward to this event and on the morning that weather conditions were perfect. Hoping to go under the hour again I set off with a lot of determination. I soon realised it was not going to happen, at the first turn I only had an average speed of 24mph and on the northerly run I had a headwind. By the time I was leaving Blyth bridge I was down to 22.5mph and in the short distance left I did my best to make some time hitting speeds of 36 mph+ but still had to settle with 1:05:15. To say I was dissappointed would be an understatement.

  • Sat...1st May............V236.........YCF 25.....What started of a good day at home changed to a very overcast with the odd spots of rain and a strong northerly breeze by the time we got to the event. My time of 1:05:35 was poor but not all that dissappionting considering the condirions and the fact that all times were down.

  • Sun..9th May...........V243..........VTTA (Yorks)30....*Another hard ride with the strong headwind on the first leg and very cold temperature plus a small shower of icey drizzle. Personally I felt strong and thought I was going well but the expected result did not materialise. I finished in a time of 1:19:06 with a plus of +12:51 and 7 points in the North Midlands VTTA prestige points series.

  • Sat...15th May.........V718..........YCF 10........................D.N.S

  • Sat...22nd May........A25/25........VTTA(NM) Nat Champs 25*....Bright sunny weather and very little wind was the order of the day. but I had a little panick when I realised that I had gone to the wrong H.Q. resulting in a five sprint across two villages to get my number then another mile back to the start line. I made it with about five minutes to go, but what a warm up.. I felt strong and it all went well once I got going to cross the finish line in 1:00:14 with a plus of +16:23.

  • Sat...29th May.........V232...........H.V.W. 25................D.N.S. rain

  • Sat...5th June..........A25/25.......Newark Castle C.C. 25.....I was hoping for a good day for this one as the last few days had been hot , still and sunny, well it was still hot but a sou'westerly wind had got up and it was overcast but at least the rain held off. I felt strong during the ride but my time was down a little at the turn so with a little help from the almost tailwind I managed to keep a good rythm holding 26 to 32 mph all the way back to pass the timekeeper in 59:55.

  • Sat 12th June.........A25/25........Sherwood C.C. 25....A bright sunny day with a north westerly wind blowing and as the southerly leg of the course is longest it should have been a good help. But in practice, though I felt good and so did the ride, it was a good but disappointing result as I had hoped to beat last weeks. I had to settle for 1:00:40.
  • Sat 19th June...........O10/3...........Pay at start club 10...This was held the weekend after my crash so I decided not to ride it, but I did drive down as it was a nice evening and took some photographs.

  • Sun 27th June.......V259............Otley 50...Still very sore so I sent in my apologies and did not go.

  • Sat 3rd July..............V259/1.........YCF 50....I went up to ride this, Jackie came along to take some photo's. This wind made the going tough or was a lack of form on my part due ti my injury lay off, I don't really know but I do know that I could not get my average speed over 22mph so after 37.25 miles of trying I threw in the towel.

  • Sat 10th July...........V236/1.......Drighlington BC. (MM)....This one was fun, I set off in good time to avoid any rushing to get ready and arrive at the start line. Problem one:- A crash on the A1 at Boroughbridge held me up in a three mile queue losing me nearly an hour. Problem two:- When I pumped up my rear tyre the valve failed letting the tube straight back down, so then it was a frantic change of tube and flat out ride to the start. I am pleased to report that I made it with a few minutes to spare. A stiff sou'westerly really helped on the two outward legs but was purgatory on the two return legs slowing me down enough to finish in 1:03:51.

  • Sat 17th July...........V236/1.......Y.R.C. 25..... Very strong crosswind made the going hard in both directions. reducing every riders time compared to last week on the same course, my time was 1:07:34.

  • Sun 25th July..........V12HR......Elmet 12 Hour........*The toughest challenge of the season but my severe lack of distance training over the last six weeks made this event even tougher. The ride started well enough but as the lack of training started to effect my legs the wind started to increase to make things worse. It was also the first 12 hour that I had done without a support vehicle meaning I carried the extra weight of a pump, spare tube, two tyre levers, a small seat bag, pockets full of Ensure liquid food and two bottle cages with large sized bottles. Considering all these fact I suppose I should be pleased with my 214.92 miles which is around 20 miles down on what I usually do. I now need an extra good 50 and 100 time to get a good place on the VTTA(NM)'s B.A.R.

  • Sun 1st Aug.............V250..........Pennine 50...... My first time on this couse which I found to be not the best course in the Yorkshire district. The single carraige- way sections have very knobbly tarmac that destroys your speed and the start is 9 miles from the H.Q. Any way after starting I could feel last weeks 12 hour still in my legs but as time went on I was getting gradually faster. As I aproached Dishforth for the final time I was on for about a 2:10:? and that is when it fell apart. I was convinced that Dishforth was the last traffic island and I was to turn left so when I found myself heading on to Kirby Hill, I thought I must have gone wrong and turned round to check, the Marshals answer made me more confused until I saw Phil Hurt ride by and I followed him. I soon realised that I was a round-a-bout too early and ended with a time of 2:16:30. I reckon the error cost me between 6.5 and 7 minutes.

  • Sat 21st Aug............V278..........Team Swift 100......*A very windy afternoon and set off at an alarming pace travelling along at 30 mph and holding 26mph up hill untill the first turn and the headwind, then it became a battle. As the wind slowly dropped, though not enough, the outward legs got harder but the homeward legs did not seem to get any easier. A lot of the top riders packed in. Joel Wainman took top honours with 3:41:24 followed closely by Nik Bowdler in 3:44:26. I could only manage 4:36:31.

  • Sat 11th Sept...........A50/6.........Team Swift 50........*Another windy day but at least the rain stayed away. The outward leg was definetly the hardest with me reaching the turn with only 21.80mph average speed, leaving me a lot to do on the return. With a little assistance from the wind I found myself travelling along at nearly 40 mph at times. I crossed the line three seconds after Nik Bowdler as he caught me for 23 minutes. My time was 2:06:30 exacly 10 minutes faster than my last fatefull 50.

  • At full tilt in the Team Swift 50 on Saturday 11th September.

  • Sat 18th Sept...........V259/1.......Yorkshire R.C. 50.....This one was the windiest that I have ridden this year, I struggled to return a time of 2:13:05 So no CTT BBAR certificate this year but there is still the Vets Prestige Trophy and a placing in their BAR to work for.

  • Sun 26th Sept............Birdwell Whs..Rarnd Tarn Audax .... This as usual was a great experience. Loads of tough challenges with climbs up though Outibridge and Green Moor. The second half is a bit easier but still quite rolling. James Allen and Graig Wilson got back together in 5:03:00 and I was next in 5:10:00.

  • Sat 2nd Oct..............O10/1..........VTTA(NM) 10......*This was a hard ride, as is usual on this course, I only manages 25:38 and got no Prestige point but luckily enough Alan Sides my nearest rival needed four points to pass me but he could only manage one so I stayed in the lead and with this event being the last one in the series for this season and means that I have won the Trophy. But I did win £10:00 as part of the winning team. "Yorkshire Road Club"

  • Sun 3rd Oct.............O10/3..........Team Swift 10... Atrocious weather conditions meant that I decided not to ride. I did set off to drive down but after about six miles thought better of it and turned back. The event was cancelled any way.

  • Sun 10th Oct...........V226............YRC Club Scrap 15..... DNS clashed with Birthday treat.

  • The end of my season and the North Midlands VTTA annual Luncheon. What a terrific do this turned out to be with me taking first place in both the B.A.R. and the Prestige points competition, second in the Middle distance contest and fourth in the short distance. I received Three certificates, three medals two gold and one silver and got to hold the Watson Trophy and the Scothern BAR trophy for one year .
