BODYBUILDING
Back in 1971 I was beaten up by a gang of lads as I came out of the cinema in Mexborough. I decided to do something about my ability to defend myself and started both weight training and karate. After a few years I realised that my physique had improved enough to try to compete in physique shows at novice level and in my first event at the Georges' Hall in Bradford I placed third, so I packed in the karate to concentrate on the body building.
The first person to coach me was a retired boxer by the name of Don Pyott but with the need to improve further I started training at the Weight and See Health Studio in Mexborough under the guidance of Fred Pierson who kept me in winning form until work took me to Darlington. Redundancy brought me back home a couple of years later and I took a job in Sheffield working as a Gym Supervisor at the Gateway Fitness and Leisure centre at the top of the Moor. I soon got back into serious training this with help from Senior Mr Britain winner Ron Davies. Under Ron I reached the National finals both English and British Championships twice. Below are various photographs from that period of my life which covered over fifteen years.
